How Strong is Your Instagram Game?
Take our quiz below to find out.
How often do you add to your Story?
Literally all the time. I keep people up-to-date on every single thing we do. The longer the story is, the better. I believe more content is be better than less..
I post often, but I know that nobody has time or wants to click through a 3-minute-long story, so I try to respect my followers’ needs. I try to post only what is important, when it’s important. For instance when I have a big sale or when there’s a cool event, not what I’m having for lunch.
From time to time. I might post to my story a lot one week, then not use it for weeks at a time. I feel like it’s fun to use, but this feature is definitely time consuming.
I never post to my story. I think I’ve heard of it before, but I have no idea what it is or how to use it. Instagram is difficult for me to navigate.
How do you capture photos?
I tend to post content I shoot directly from the app or directly from my phone. It’s most efficient to shoot and edit directly through Instagram.
If lucky, I’ll take professional-style photos with a DSLR.. If I do not have a DSLR, I always make sure to shoot in quality lighting, and I always edit photos with VSCO and Snapseed even if they come out “perfect” the first time.
My phone usually. I have a few high quality shots friends have taken on better cameras getting those onto my phone is a hassle. I’ve pulled a few photos from the internet before, and I sometime just repost screenshots I’ve taken.
Isn’t the point to shoot and share photos I take directly on the app?
You have a series of photos and you want to post them all today. What do you do?
I post them all that day, either individually or stitched together.
I tend to only pick the photos that really tell my brand’s story well. If I have a bunch of photos that need to be shared, I’ll post them as an album.
I’ve posted maybe like one album before, but it was only after a big event. Other than that, I space out my photos pretty well without oversharing.
I don’t normally have that much content (photos) to post or share.
Static photos don’t always cut it. Videos are sometimes necessary when telling a story. What kind of Instagram videos do you enjoy and like to post?
I video many random moments throughout the day. I always want my followers to feel like they are with my business.
I think some of the best videos I’ve seen require lots of work and creativity. I’d only post a video if it was high quality or creative, like a stop motion video.
I think the occasional video that shows my brand’s life in action is always nice to see. I do like to see and post a video once in a blue moon.
I never post videos. I don’t have much time for that much work. The only videos that make sense to me are the long ones on TV or feature-length films.
People like stunning pictures that look like they belong in a magazine. How do you get picture perfect shots for your Instagram?
I try the best I can to get quality shots on my phone. But who cares if it’s not perfect? #KeepItReal #AmIRight
I take about a million frames on my phone at a time, or I have my cool photographer friends shoot the shots. I then spend about two hours figuring out which images have the most potential, and then I edit them with Snapseed or Vsco until they’re #PerfectAF.
I only take pictures with a DSLR. Or I only take them on my new iPhone. I don’t put too much thought into it though, but I do enjoy all the cool filters you can choose from.
I’m really not very good at photography. I wish I had a better eye!
What does your Instagram account look like currently?
It looks like me. I post pictures that make me happy when they make me happy.
It looks like a stunning collage and my personal brand if it were a major magazine.
It looks somewhat pretty. Not super professional, but I like how it looks.
It looks like the world to someone with glasses when they’re not wearing them.
If you could improve anything visually about your account, what would you fix?
I don’t think over my choices for my account much, so I wish it looked like something I put more thought and planning into.
I think my account is #flawless already. But can I ever stop striving for better lighting, and wishing that it made life seem more perfect than it already is?
I think it should look a little bit more professional and like I put some time into the lighting and photography. I wish my photos all made more sense for what my account is trying to convey.
Everything. I wish I had a better eye for photos and really think it’d be a miracle if a unicorn fell from the sky to fix everything.
What does the term “consistency” mean in terms of Instagram?
It means post more often. The more photos I post throughout the day, the better.
It means that all content an account posts should look like it fits that account.
It means posting pictures with similar colors and of similar things again and again.
It means a million things, right? Actually, I’m unsure what it means…
How does the world of Instagram define the word “niche?”
It means that someone is very, very good at Instagram.
It defines the account’s category, and indicates what kind of content that account will continually post. For instance fitness, food, sports, and whatnot.
I think it has to do with what an account likes to post, but not necessarily a category.
Not exactly sure, but it sounds like something interesting.
A fitness instructor runs an account about her weight loss programs. Which kind of content is the best way to for her promote her services?
Lots and lots of mirror gym shots. The best way to earn trust is to show time in the gym and her own physique.
A variety of photos that show what they think others should eat, videos of smart exercises, and at least one weekly before and after post from their real clients.
Showing off her personal body success and lots of smoothie bowls.
Just advertisements on Instagram, her account can promote her personal life.
How does one stay “true to themselves” when they add to their story?
They keep others up to date on what they’re doing each day. Like what they eat for breakfast, what they’re wearing, what it’s like at work, and who they eat dinner with.
They stick to what their brand is, and show only relevant moments on their story. They really only want to share what is important so that people stay engaged.
Follow your brand and only post what you find to be funny, and hope others enjoy.
They add really personal stuff that makes their followers relate to them.
Which kind of accounts should a famous Jazz musician in town follow?
Whoever they want, I’m sure they have memes they find to be funny.
Other Jazz musicians, performance venues, and other musicians who inspire them.
Only their friends and people they really know and care about.
Everybody who is cool in New Orleans
What’s your “followers” to “following” ratio?
Getting people to follow me back is very hard! I’d say I follow twice as many people who actually follow me.
I’m followed by way more people than I actually follow back. There is no way I can follow everybody back. I wish I could, but I think Instagram has a limit on that. Plus, I only follow accounts that I actually want to see.
It’s mostly even. Sometimes I feel like I have more followers than the amount of people I can follow back, but it all depends. I don’t pay as much attention as I should though.
It’s so uneven and so unfair, but at least I get to see some pretty cool things from those I choose to follow.
What percentage of your followers actually “like” your photos?
Not that many actually. I feel like I like my photos more than others do, because I’ve never hit triple digits before. Usually it’s less than 30 people and I have 700 followers.
Too many to count. I’ve had to turn off notifications because I don’t want to be reminded a thousand times that some rando has “liked” my photos. Probably at least 10% though.
A pretty normal amount. I think most people get somewhere between 50-150 likes when they post, as long as they don’t post anything stupid.
Very few. I’m not sure why I can’t get much more than 10 likes. I guess it’s the photos?
What kinds of comments do your photos normally get?
The occasional “nice” or “follow me” from random accounts. I feel spammed by creeps.
Usually, they seem to attract a whole conversation! Everyone wants to know where they can get the “rad” yoga pants or decadent po-boy they see. The two-way conversation is nice, but it can get overwhelming sometimes.
Usually it’s a comment from a buddy of mine, like a personal friend or someone I know who also runs a similar business.
Nobody, except maybe for my brother, comments on my posts. I wonder why.
Do you know why only some of your followers see your photos as they’re posted?
Because they’re not online as often as me. I have a typical day job just like them, but I’m still online 24/7, and they’re missing out because they’re not.
Because Instagram manipulates the feed against my account to benefit people that pay for their content to be seen.
Because I probably post at weird times, I think that’s why. I’ve also heard about the algorithm thing before, but I’m not sure how it impacts my reach.
Because I don’t have that many followers. I don’t think I can reach much more.
Speaking of algorithms, how does the algorithm affect accounts?
I think they mess up the timing of when people see my photos. For some reason photos that were posted yesterday always rank higher on my feed than the photos I posted a second ago. It’s not fair.
It affects your reach, affects the niche of content you see, affects the advertising you have to see, and it curates content to fit a user’s interests.
It makes it so only your real friends have to see your absurd photos.
I have absolutely no idea. Do I look like a genius to you?
Which giveaway style do you prefer?
Maybe, like, a giveaway a week or something. People should always be able to come back and win something.
One with a prize that solves a problem most people “seem” to have. In order to win, they should tell friends to tag their friends in the comments.
One with a really cool prize every so often. The winner should secretly be the commenter with the most followers.
Giveaways? Maybe I’d try to have little yard sale online, I have so much to giveaway
